Hi, my name is
Kelly Gyde.
I'm the founder of becos
and the creator of the
becos Literacy Programme.
THE STORY
OF BECOS
I have a background in primary teaching and have been involved in education for around 30 years. About 14 years ago, I started specialising in working with children who struggle with literacy.
Teachers are passionate about their students' achievement, and I was determined to make a difference for kids who were finding spelling, reading and writing difficult.
However, despite my hard work, my students' hard work and parents' hard work to pay for tutoring, I found that the kids who struggled with literacy didn't make the progress we were all hoping for.
So ... I started trying to find out why.
Through my research I discovered that not everyone learns the same way. Some of us are wired for language and others find thinking and learning in pictures comes much more naturally.
I discovered that when students struggle with literacy, it doesn't necessarily mean they have a learning problem.
It's language, and the way we teach it that's the problem.
So, I decided, if language is the problem, we need to change it. And that's just what I did.
I developed a pictorial alphabet (the becos Symbol Alphabet), that teaches students all the sounds needed to spell, read and write.
The becos Symbol Alphabet is used as a decoding tool which helps the brain manipulate sounds.
Putting sounds together and pulling sounds apart with the becos Symbol Alphabet helps to make connections between pictures, sounds, letters and words and enables students to practise manipulating sounds in an easy and enjoyable way that builds their skill and confidence in literacy.
I also created pictures and stories to go with each sound as an easy way for students to learn how to spell and to recall spelling patterns easily.
I have been amazed at how quickly my students have improved with the becos programme and I'm excited to be able to share this wonderful learning tool with you.
